Trigger point are hyper irritable spots within a taut band of skeletal muscle bellies. They often produce pain locally and can refer a pain pattern following chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Acute trauma or repetitive micro trauma to tissues will often lead to the development of tigger points. Clients may have persistent pain resulting in a decreased range of motion in the affected muscles. These include muscles used to maintain body posture, such as those in the neck, shoulders, and pelvic girdle. Palpation of a hyper sensitive muscle belly that is harder than normal consistency is the most obvious finding of a tigger point. Palpation of a trigger point will often elicit pain directly over the affected area and/or cause radiation of pain toward a zone of reference and a local twitch response. Trigger point therapy has been shown to be the most affective treatment modalities to inactivate trigger pints and provide instant relief of symptoms.
